Gratitude has the Power to Heal

We will celebrate our growing culture of gratitude by creating awareness about philanthropy and how it can impact our patients and their families. Expressions of gratitude have been shown to increase positivity and happiness, deepening our relationships with one another.

MedStar NRH Inpatient

After twenty years of back pain, John Chance, grateful patient, was ready to try yet another surgery in attempts to repair what others could not. The surgery was a success, but John still faced a difficult road to recovery.

It was during his rehabilitation at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital that he met Jason Christian, PT, DPT, physical therapist, one of several outstanding team members on his care team. It was Jason who helped John overcome his most daunting rehabilitative challenge: the many steps in the hospital’s Victory Garden. With this victory over his personal Everest behind him, John is now looking ahead to a brighter future without chronic back pain. "I just want to give others facing a difficult situation a little hope—and to say thank you to MedStar NRH for giving me back my life.”

MedStar NRH Outpatient

Eighteen years ago, Mark Musselman, PT, Clinical Director of MedStar National Rehabilitation Network at Perry Hall, hired Debbie Conley, office supervisor of MedStar National Rehabilitation Network’s Lutherville Sports, to work in the White Marsh Outpatient Clinic of the MedStar National Rehabilitation Network. When Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, it was a personal experience for Mark, who had recently lost his sister to breast cancer. He and other Team Members from their clinic immediately extended their support, providing regular dinners for her family, pitching in for gift cards and lots of hugs. When the request for Paid Time Off was made, she reached her needed amount in only two hours due to the generosity of the NRH network team.

“Never underestimate the healing power of a smile, hug, or kind word. Going through a scary diagnosis brought us closer together and made us stronger. My coworkers became my family,” Debbie shares. After chemotherapy and several surgeries, Debbie is now cancer free!
