What is a Physiatrist and Physiatry Medicine?

A physiatrist (pronounced fizz-ee-at’ trist) is a medical physician who specializes in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physiatry is a specialized non-surgical branch of medicine that addresses problems that touch upon all major systems in the body, using aggressive rehabilitation to promote the restoration of maximum function to people with problems ranging from simple physical mobility to complex cognitive functions.

Why should I see a Physiatrist?

By taking the whole body into account, physiatrists are able to accurately pinpoint problems and enhance performance without surgery. Surgery may seem like the easier and faster treatment option; however that is rarely the case.

Surgical procedures can be very expensive, cause scarring, absence from work or important events, depression, extensive recovery time, infections, and unfortunate/unpredictable complications that can lead to serious injury or possible death. Even though most surgical procedures are safe and conducted by highly qualified surgeons, operations can put your health at risk.

Physiatry is typically a more cost effective, safer, and noninvasive form of treatment than surgery that can deliver the same, if not better, results. That’s why many people including professional athletes and the U.S. military choose physiatry over surgery. Before surgery is contemplated, THINK PHYSIATRY!
