Social Work Program | MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital | MedStar Health

Welcome

MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital offers social work students a one-year training experience at a premier inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Both senior undergraduate and Master's level students are accepted for field placements.

We employ twelve inpatient case managers, most of whom are social workers by training, and two full-time outpatient social workers. Social workers are involved with discharge planning, family interventions and supportive counseling for patients undergoing rehabilitation. They facilitate daily meetings for the treatment team and serve as the liaison between patients, families, and the medical team.

Our social workers welcome the opportunity to provide field experience for students. Students are fully integrated into the program and take leadership roles as deemed appropriate by the field instructor. Students are assigned to one social worker as their primary field instructor, but they may have the opportunity to rotate to another service for a short period of time during their second semester. Placements include both inpatient and outpatient opportunities.

Student placements can be arranged through the participating university and can provide the student with individual, group, and family experience. Typically, students are at MedStar NRH two or three days per week, depending on school requirements, however a five-day per week placement can be negotiated if the school agrees. The program is individually designed to meet the academic requirements of each participating university.
