A quad rugby paralympic athlete from Team USA, Mark Zuban, recently visited MedStar NRH to talk about his story – a nearly tragic one.
Zupan was a young man when he was in a horrific motor vehicle accident that almost killed him. The incident left him a quadriplegic.
At age 18, Zupan, who then was a varsity football and soccer player, saw his life change dramatically after this. He went on to graduate from Georgia Tech University and became a four-time quad rugby player of the year.
He was a member of the 2004 bronze medal winning U.S team at the 2004 Paralympic Games and was part of the 2008 gold medal winning team.
Zupan has written an autobiography – Gimp – and also is a motivational speaker.
He visited MedStar NRH to offer hope to many of our patients – spinal cord injury patients in particular – to let them know that there is hope despite the tragedy and heartache that life sometimes throws at us.
Zupan’s claim to fame is his appearance in the film Murderball, a well-known movie among quad rugby and spinal cord injury communities.
